Nacho Libre, Found Materials Book, Bootleg DVD covers (Nacho Libre, Curse of the Golden Flower), Thai Kozo paper, Reeves Lightweight, Coptic Stitch, 7.5 x 5.3 in, 2018-Now
Using found bootleg DVD cases for the front and back cover, I crafted this book with the purpose of filling it with comics. I never knew how to start writing a comic, and I found that the longer I thought about it and trying to tweak it to be perfect, the more paralyzed I got. I decided that to curve this and force myself to start, I would have to do it with as little perfecting and planning as possible. That is why I started going in straight with pen on these pages, no over thinking, no pencil marks, no regret. I learned to forgive myself for mistakes, and accept that some days were better than others for concentration and drawing style. Some of my hardest days I noticed produced my favorite images. This is a work in progress.
She Wolf, 5 x 7 in, Reeves Lightweight, Watercolor, 2018
This project is based off of a book titled, "Women who Run with the Wolves" by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. It tells of myths and stories of the "wild woman" archetype, one not often taught about in our culture in the United States today. The Wild Woman is a teacher, a mother, a sister, and everything else we could ever need. There is a Wild Woman inside of all women, and listening to her means being true to ourselves. I enjoyed this book very much, and learned about myself in the process of reading it.
One motif that stood out to me was the wolf, a free spirit, and a symbol for a pure soul. One story accounted in the book is of La Loba, an old woman who lives in the woods collecting animal bones. She brings them to her home and performs a ceremony, where the bones spring to life in the form of a glowing blue wolf who runs away, transforming into a woman. This wolf in my book is wrapped up with all the beautiful complexities of femme people. Each layer reveals a new story.

Gumby, Found Materials Book, Bootleg DVD covers (Cartoon Craze: Gumby: Gubasia, Flash Gordon), Hand Pulled Thai Kozo paper, Recycled Cotton paper, and Abaca paper with tea leaves, Coptic Stitch, 7.5 x 5.3 in, 2021
For this sketchbook, I incorporated hand pulled cotton rag sheets, a couple that I had made water marble texture on, and hand pulled abaca sheets I had incorporated tea leaves into. To bind the book, I used a classic coptic stitch.
